ஒவ்வொரு ஆண்டும் அக்டோபர் முதல் டிசம்பர் வரையிலான 3 மாத காலங்கள் தமிழகத்தில் வடகிழக்கு பருவமழை பெய்யும் காலமாகும். தமிழக நீர் ஆதாரத்தின் முக்கியமான அம்சமாக வடகிழக்கு பருவமழை கவனிக்கப்படுகிறது. சென்னையை பொறுத்தவரை வடகிழக்கு பருவமழை காலத்தில் தான் அதிக அளவு மழை கிடைக்கும். ஒவ்வொரு ஆண்டும் அக்டோபர் 20–ந்தேதி முதல் 25–ந்தேதிக்குள் வடகிழக்கு பருவமழை தொடங்க சாதகமான சூழல் ஏற்படும்
